Congruence and Similarity

When two figures have the same shape and size, they are congruent. Similar means that the figures have the same shape, but not the same size.

Congruence

Figures that have the same shape AND size are congruent.

Similarity

Similar figures have the same shape but not necessarily and the same size.

The symbol ∼ is used to indicate similarity.

Two triangles are said to be similar if their corresponding angles are congruent and the corresponding sides are in proportion . In other words, similar triangles are the same shape, but not necessarily the same size.
