Multiplying fractions with whole numbers and mixed numbers is a straight forward and simple process.

Parts of a Fraction

It helps to know the parts of the fraction when multiplying.

The Steps

  1. Multiply the numerators
  2. Multiply the denominators
  3. Simplify the fraction to lowest terms


Multiplying Fractions to Whole Numbers

When multiplying fractions with whole numbers, the whole number(s) must be put over 1.


Multiplying Fractions to Mixed Numbers

Mixed numbers must be changed to improper fractions


Multiplying Mixed Numbers

Again, don’t forget to change the mixed numbers to improper fractions after you have finished multiplying and simplifying.
