Percents

Percents are used for a large variety of areas: commerce, interest rates, and a variety of statistics in many fields. When a retailer sales products or services, percents are used for discounts to entice buyers. Percents are used in department stores, restaurants, banks, and so much more.

What does percent mean?

Percent means “out of 100.” The symbol % is shorthand for writing a ratio that is based on the number 100. So, if a basketball player made 85 out of 100 free throws attempted, we would say that the player made 85 percent of all attempted free throws.

Converting between Decimals and Percents

To change a decimal to a percent, you multiply the decimal by 100 and add the % sign.

To change a percent to a decimal, you divide the percent by a decimal and drop the % sign.

Converting between Fractions and Percents

To change a fraction to a percent, change the fraction to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Then change the decimal to a percent.

To change a percent to a fraction, put the percent over 100, drop the % sign, and simplify a fraction.

Benchmark Percents

There is a certain percent that you should know what their decimal and fraction equivalents are. Knowing these benchmarks will help you solve a number of mathematical problems without computation.
